Ilkay Gundogan Despite spending big in the summer, it’s still fairly evident that The Red Devils need to assess the state of their midfield during the the January transfer window. Fans and pundits alike are in agreement that their current personnel just don’t carry the competitive edge necessary to see them through an entire season.

On the basis of some of the performances we’ve seen thus far this season, it’s hard to disagree with them. Whilst players like Marouane Fellaini and Daley Blind have been brought in to add steel to United’s midfield, both options have struggled to make their mark at Old Trafford. Blind deserves more time, but it’s clear that United could use more options.

Various sources suggest that Louis Van Gaal has his heart set on signing ‘The Dutch Roy Keane’, Kevin Strootman, but The Express claims that United are also watching Borussia Dortmund star, Ilkay Gundogan.

The Red Devils have actually been interested in the German ace for quite some time, but the player’s long-term injury prevented them from making a move. Now that Gundogan is available once again, I wonder if Manchester United will start to pay attention once again.

Of course, there’s no telling how badly Gundogan’s injury will affect his career, but at 23-years-old, there’s every reason to keep the faith. The German proved that he was fantastically talented before his injury lay-off (collecting 8 caps along the way) and he has plenty of time to re-find his form.

Moving to a foreign League could complicate the process, but Gundogan has always been a combative type and I’m sure he’d fit in nicely in the Premier League. He’s the kind of footballer who will battle for every ball and who can often make things happen through sheer force of wheel.

You can see why Manchester United might be interested, especially if Dortmund are willing to sell for a reasonable price. Either way, let’s hope that Gundogan gets back to his best as soon as possible.

What’s your take? What does the future hold for Ilkay Gundogan? Should Manchester United be interested?
