Should Arsenal provide this ‘sad’ £55m star with an exit route?

CavaniI think it’s fair to say that when Danny Welbeck first arrived at The Emirates as part of a £16m summer move, fans had their concerns. His goal-scoring record at Manchester United was never fantastic and it wasn’t clear that he would be the solution for Arsenal moving forward.

Luckily, he’s already delivered his breakthrough performance, scoring his first professional hat-trick in a comprehensive 4-1 win over Galatasaray. Talk about announcing yourself.

More than a few pundits have compared his finishing technique to that of former Arsenal legend, Thierry Henry. With his pace, technique and goal-scoring nous, perhaps there’s something to those comparisons.

But having decent options in attacking positions has never prevented Arsene Wenger from reaching out into the transfer market to bring in fresh-faced recruits. Perhaps this trend will continue in the January transfer window.

Olivier Giroud may just have signed a new Arsenal deal, but I can’t be the only one who’s not entirely convinced by him. If Danny Welbeck demonstrates any inconsistency over the course of this season (or God forbid, picks up an injury), The Gunners may need another option.

This brings me nicely to The Metro‘s claim that Arsenal are strongly considering signing Paris Saint Germain’s world-class centre-forward, Edinson Cavani in the January transfer market. What a statement that would be.

The source suggests that Edinson Cavani is unsettled at Paris, and carry quotes from former PSG-goalie, Jerome Alonzo, who suggests that the Uruguayan is ‘sad’ and ‘unrecognisable’. This could provide The Gunners with an opportunity to sneak in and seal a deal.

A player with that much goal-scoring nous certainly won’t come cheap. According to The Metro, he could cost Arsenal around £55m. In other words, they’re going to have to break their transfer record (the £42.4m they spent on Mesut Ozil) to close out this deal. Arsene Wenger really will have to put his money where his mouth is.

But let’s not forget, this is a player who scored 104 goals in 138 games for Napoli. He’s worthy of his price-tag. Let’s just hope that Arsene Wenger feels the same way.

What’s your take? Can Arsenal afford to compete for Edinson Cavani?
