Is Winston Reid exactly what Manchester United need?

|

Winston ReidLouis Van Gaal has taken a lot of flack in recent weeks  state of his defense. Whilst there’s no way that he could have foreseen his club’s injury woes, there’s a lot more he could have done to prevent Manchester United being in this dire a situation.

Van Gaal knew that he would be losing two experienced centre-backs during the summer. With Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic making their way to Old Trafford’s exit gates, it was clear that United would need a couple of new, experienced centre-back options brought in.

Unfortunately, The Dutchman was more interested in bolstering his attacking line-up. He signed Marcos Rojo, who has thus far failed to impressed and must have assumed that this would be enough. He was wrong.

Injuries have crippled his back-four, who have in turn offered up a number of inconsistent performances. You only need to look to The Red Devil’s 5-3 defeat to Leicester for evidence of how things bad are.

As a result, I’m sure that Manchester United fans will be interested to see that their club is currently in the market for West Ham centre-back, Winston Reid. Apparently it’s not enough for The Red Devils to beat The Hammers 2-1. They’re also keen to snap up one of their star performers.

Winston Reid’s West Ham contract will expire next summer when he’ll be available as a free transfer. Alternatively, Louis Van Gaal could slip in a January bid to try and snap him up as part of a cut-price deal (preventing a free-for-all in the summer).

At 26-years-old, Winston Reid should be about to enter the best years of his playing career. He knows the Premier League well and he’s a solid performer. He’d certainly represent a significant improvement on The Red Devils current options.

West Ham won’t be too keen to sell up, but given the player’s contractual situation, they may have little choice in the matter. It’ll certainly be interesting to watch this one play out.

What’s your take? Is Winston Reid the right man for the job at Manchester United?
