Is Sami Khedira the last piece of Arsenal’s jigsaw puzzle?

Khedira1The Gunners have had an average start to their season at best. Having signed Alexis Sanchez in the summer, many fans thought that they’d kick on and start challenging for more silverware. As it happens, however, Arsenal look a little under-par. They’ve certainly struggled in the big games (think back to their 2-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund, the manner of their defeat against Chelsea and even their bore draw with Spurs).

The problem, I would argue, is that Arsenal lack balance. They’re got an impressive roster of attacking options (just think of how many awesome attacking midfielders they have among their ranks). What they lack, however, is defensive nous and defensively-minded personnel.

They don’t work hard enough as a defensive unit and they don’t have enough cover when they lose possession. Arsenal have transformed from a great counter-attacking team into a team that’s constantly getting beaten on the break. It’s a little hard to take. This brings me to Robert Pires’ recent comments.

According to the ex-Arsenal legend, all Arsene Wenger needs to do to rectify the situation is sign Sami Khedira. Check out these comments from the Frenchman:

‘Wenger needs a big player in the middle [to win the title], somebody strong, tall and to balance attack and defence. They have an opportunity with Khedira. He has a lot of experience and you need that to play in the middle, especially for Arsenal’. (Source: The Metro)

I have to say, I agree with Bobby. Sami Khedira is an inordinately talented defensive midfielder, who’s also able to contribute going forward. He’ll provide protection in front of the back-four and will help Arsenal to deal with things in the air a little better (he’s a lot taller and more physical than the likes of Jack Wilshere, Santi Cazorla, Mathieu Flamini, etc).

He’s better defensively than Mathieu Flamini and I’d argue that he’s more dynamic and effective than Mikel Arteta. Given his contractual situation (his Real Madrid contract is up at the end of the year), Arsenal would be foolish not to test the waters this January. Robert Pires is absolutely right.

What’s your take? Would Sami Khedira improve this Arsenal side?
