Is it time for Manchester United to give up on Mats Hummels?

Mats HummelsManchester United’s defense is currently in a bit of a state. Pundits and armchair warriors alike can’t seem to stop reminding us of this fact.

If you want to point fingers, as many fans have, it’s easy enough to blame Louis Van Gaal and the rest of the Manchester United hierarchy. They had a lot of cash to spend this summer and they spent it on bolstering their attack at the expense of their defense.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m delighted to see players like Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao in a Manchester United shirt. But their arrival hardly makes up for the fact that Van Gaal and co. let Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic go without bringing in suitable replacements.

If everyone else saw this coming, then why didn’t they? This strikes me as an example of some extremely poor judgement.

Now The Red Devils are going to have to wait until January to put things right. I bet Louis Van Gaal is already working on his defender wish list.

One player who may not be on this list following some recent comments is Borussia Dortmund’s superstar defender, Mats Hummels. Here’s what he had to say when he was asked about Manchester United’s interest:

‘I take that as a compliment but it doesn’t influence me in any way, otherwise. We earn enough here in Dortmund. There will always be someone who can pay more than BVB but Dortmund have made a lot of progress during my time here. In any case I believe it’s enough for me. If one day I start thinking about playing abroad, money won’t be the reason. I don’t even think about that at the moment. We still have so much further to go here.’ (Source: The Metro)

That’s not exactly promising is it? I wouldn’t bet on a January deal happening at this stage.

But he doesn’t completely rule out a future move and given the depth of his talent, he’s a player who should remain on United’s radar. He looks like he’s custom built for the Premier League and I doubt he’ll want to play second fiddle in the Bundesliga for the rest of his career.

Let’s just hope that Manchester United can stop him from becoming a one-club man.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United continue to pursue Mats Hummels?

Manchester United have never played a German player in their first team. So I will not hold my breath on their signing any German player!

(Ron Robert Zeigler, only played for the reserve team)
