Is Cristiano Ronaldo really worth £140m?

Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United)There’s been a lot of rumours over the last few weeks about Cristiano Ronaldo making a potential return back to Old Trafford at some stage in his career.

The Portuguese wing-wizard has always been complimentary about his old side and has spoken on numerous occasions about his desire to return to Manchester before his career draws to a close. Now wouldn’t that be something?

Surely having the second best player in the world (who has arguably looked even better than Lionel Messi this year), would shake Manchester United out of their slumber?

Since Sir Alex Ferguson left Old Trafford two summers ago, Manchester United have looked like a club lacking in identity, confidence and poise. They’ve tried to fix the situation by spending a lot of money, but as of yet, this approach hasn’t worked.

But surely a player as good as Cristiano Ronaldo would be able to turn things around. He’s too good not to.

Unfortunately, his boss, Carlo Ancelotti has been rather bullish about the player’s future. Check out these comments: “I believe the reports are nonsense,” he said. “Cristiano is happy here and is very motivated to be at this club and all at Real Madrid are happy with him.” (Source: The Express)

And here’s the player himself, who has also been somewhat dismissive: “It’s all speculation, speaking about my future … My future is Madrid. I’m happy. The season is going well and I’m not talking about my future, it doesn’t make sense.”

It doesn’t sound good for Manchester United does it? Especially not with The Express claiming that The Red Devils have been quoted a staggering £140m fee to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford. Ouch.

That’s a fee that would crush the existing world transfer record. It’s also a fee that even a cash-rich club like Manchester United would struggle to conjure up.

I’d argue that no player in world football is worth that much, especially not one who’s now 29-years-old. If that’s what it would take to bring Ronaldo back to Old Trafford, then Louis Van Gaal is better off staying clear.

I’d sooner see The Red Devils spend £60m to fix their defense whilst also spending some cash to turn Radamel Falcao’s loan deal into a long-term deal. That would save them money in the long-term, whilst adding more balance to their side.

Let’s just hope that Louis Van Gaal doesn’t get too caught up in the nostalgia of the situation.

What’s your take? Could Cristiano Ronaldo ever return back to Old Trafford?
