Has Liverpool’s next signing already had his medical?

Goalkeeper - Victor ValdesLiverpool have started the season slowly, but will have been glad to register a 2-1 win over West Brom last weekend. With their key men struggling for goals, it was good to see both Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana pop up and find the back of the net.

But things aren’t so sound defensively speaking. Last season, The Reds conceded 50 Premier League goals. To fix this, he brought in two quality defenders: Dejan Lovren and Alberto Moreno. Unfortunately, they’re still settling in and haven’t made a major impact thus far. It looks like Liverpool are going to concede a lot of goals again this year.

Perhaps the best way round the problem is to bring in a better goal-keeper – somebody who will up the confidence of the defenders who are playing in front of him. When you’ve got an astute keeper between the sticks, the rest of the team tends to up their game from a defensive point of view.

It’s not that Simon Mignolet is a bad option. On his day, he can be fantastic. On an off day, however, he’s error prone and inconsistent. Brendan Rodgers could certainly find a better option were he to scour the transfer market.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Barcelona’s legendary ex-goalie, Victor Valdes could be on his way to Anfield. The source suggests that The Reds have offered the Spaniard a medical ahead of a two-year Liverpool contract. Things seem to be moving pretty quickly, don’t they?

Victor Valdes’ fitness has been in doubt since early in the year, when he picked up a serious knee injury. If The Reds are forging ahead, then it looks any former concerns have been put to bed. Valdes must be fit and ready for action.

If these rumours are true, then Simon Mignolet has plenty of room for concern. Either way, upping the competition between the sticks is a major step forward for Liverpool. Hopefully The Reds will start conceding less goals with Victor Valdes in tow.

What’s your take? Could The Reds really be close to signing Victor Valdes?

Even Alberto Moreno , himself , doesn’t think he is a “quality” defender , or a defender of any description , though he is clearly a fine attacking player .

I sometimes wonder whether you guest writers should stick to darts or snooker , it would then not be so obvious that you have never attended a single game !
