Arsene WengerIt looks like Arsenal fans weren’t altogether pleased with their club’s summer spending. Whilst certain new additions (like Alexis Sanchez and Calum Chambers) have already caught the eye, the general consensus is that the club has failed to deal with all the issues that currently face this squad.

They’re now spoiled for choice upfront. The jury’s still out when it comes to former Manchester United star, Danny Welbeck, but there’s no doubt that he’s a better option than Yaya Sanogo. All in all, it’s a positive step forward for The Gunners. Last season, Nicklas Bendtner was Olivier Giroud’s back-up. Now it’s Welbeck.

When Alexis Sanchez is fully settled, he’s going to make a huge impact on this Arsenal side. With Mesut Ozil, Aaron Ramsey and Santi Cazorla playing behind him, The Gunners are sure to bag a few goals.

Unfortunately, things aren’t so solid in defensive positions.

Calum Chambers and Mathieu Debuchy (who I’m not convinced by), have been drafted in, but Arsenal are still woefully under-equipped in the centre-back position.

They sold Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona early on in the summer and they failed to bring in a replacement. Beyond Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny, Arsenal’s options are extremely limited.

I’d also argue that Arsenal could use a new defensive midfielder to compete with Mikel Arteta (Mathieu Flamini has been completely ineffective thus far this season), but this is a little more debatable.

Either way, it looks like The Gunners are going to need to dip into the transfer market again this January. That’s why I was pleased to see The Metro claim that Arsenal will have upwards of £50m to spend when the window re-opens.

They arrived at this figure by running Arsenal’s net-spend this summer against the club’s mooted £100m budget. Not exactly scientific and open to debate, but I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed none the less.

£50m is more than enough to bring in a top quality centre-back and a defensive midfielder. Let’s just hope that Arsene Wenger is already lining up a list of targets.

What’s your take? What transfer activity do The Gunners need to conduct this January?
