William CarvalhoAll summer long, The Gunners have been chasing defensive midfield options. Now that we’re approaching the end of the transfer window, Arsene Wenger may be forced into action. Not before time.

Arsenal have been linked to a number of decent options. In fact, the same names keep popping up: Sami Khedira (who seems set to stay at Real Madrid), Morgan Schneiderlin (who seems set to stay at Southampton) and William Carvalho (a Sporting Lisbon star, who seems to be available for the right price).

Whilst Sami Khedira appears to have been the fan favourite out of this bunch, I’d argue that William Carvalho is a better fit for The Gunners.

For a start, he’s got genuine physical presence – something Arsenal have lacked since they sold Alex Song to Barcelona. He’s also a true athlete, with bags of energy, a real drive and a competitive edge. It’s this edge that should should allow him to quickly adapt to Premier League action.

It’s also worth emphasizing his youth. At just 22-years-old, he’s a lot younger than most of other options that may be available. As a result, he represents a good long-term investment for The Gunners.

This is lucky, as he’s not going to come cheap. The Metro recently published an article suggesting that his club, Sporting Lisbon, had reduced their demands and would accept an offer of £24m. That’s still a lot of money.

The source also suggests that Sporting Lisbon are looking to take an Arsenal player or two on loan as part of the deal. This could be a good opportunity for players on the fringe – players like Serge Gnabry and Yaya Sanogo – to earn some serious game time.

With Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini both getting on in years, Arsenal’s need is becoming more and more pressing. If they wait until January, or next summer, there’s a good chance that William Carvalho’s price-tag will rise. Now looks like the right time to strike.

What’s your take? Is William Carvalho the player that Arsenal need to sign before the end of the transfer window?
