Mateo MusacchioSpurs had all kinds of issues last season, foremost among which was their lack of defensive nous. Andre Villas-Boas brought in a bunch of midfielders, but he somewhat neglected his back-line. Let’s hope that new Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino takes a different tact.

If Tottenham can stop leaking needless goals, they’ll be much better placed next season. If some of the signings they’ve made over the last 12 months start to improve, they could even aim for a Champions League spot.

With the clubs around Spurs spending like money is going out of fashion, Pochettino needs to act quickly. If he doesn’t he’s in danger of getting left behind.

This brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that Spurs are hot on the trail of Villareal’s defensive talent, Mateo Musacchio. The 23-year-old has been making quite a name for himself over the last couple of seasons of La Liga action. He’s even managed to break into the Argentina international team, earning two caps.

He’s a young player who’s only just starting to realise his full potential. It’s an exciting time for him, so it’s little wonder that Spurs are sniffing around. The aforementioned source claims that Villareal have slapped a £21m price-tag on the player.

That’s a substantial amount of cash – it’s also evidence of how highly regarded he is. The Mirror suggest that Spurs will open the bidding at around £16m. It’ll certainly be interesting to watch this one play out.

If Spurs can close the deal they’ll receive a player who’s capable of making an instant impact in the Premier League. He’s big, he’s physical and he’s strong in the air. He also positions himself well and makes a number of important tackles in each game.

In other words, he’s good enough to justify his big price-tag. Let’s just hope that Mauricio Pochettino is ready to spend big this summer. A player like Musacchio could be just what Spurs need.

What’s your take? Should Spurs make a bid for this £21m La Liga wonder?

Not enough apparently price gone up to 51m euro’s. I am tired of this transfer. All Spurs need to do is dump Dawson and she’ll be apples. For once Spurs can do what they want. The expectations are way lower than before. So hopefully a bit of common sense will prevail this year?

crazy jump in the asking price today if the multiple reports are to be believed… vilareal own 35% his former club in argetina own 35% and his agent 30%

seems way to complex and messy a deal for Levy to go for it…

I still feel Kaboul can return to form if he remains injury free and he is in fact our fastest player over 100metres so will suit Poch’s style of play. Dawson can cover and generally does alright against the non top 6 teams, chirices has potential just needs some coaching to smooth out his performances…. Jan is quality when he’s interested, Zeki Fryers and new lad Dier too…. just wish we held on to Caulker.
I think this season might be a case of aiming low and if we get that coveted top 4 it’ll be a pleasant surprise.
