Should Liverpool finally seal this £22m deal?

Liverpool have been linked to a number of players this summer, but no one name seems to pop up more often than that belonging to Sevilla left-back, Alberto Moreno. Whilst Loic Remy has come closer to agreeing a Liverpool deal (before failing his medical), Moreno has been in the conversation so long that this transfer almost looks destined to happen.

I’m sure that fans will hope this is the case. At just 22-years-old, the mini full-back looks like a fantastic option. He’s got bags of technical talent, real attacking verve and an eye for a pass. He’s pretty effective in the final third and he’s not a bad defender either. Whilst there are aspects of his game that are still developing, his talent and youth make him a remarkable prospect.

The only trouble is his colossal price-tag. According to The Mirror, Liverpool are still interested in the Spanish star, but they’re finding it difficult to get past Sevilla’s £22m asking price. There’s no doubt that this is a lot of money.

But didn’t The Reds just get a significant chunk of change out of the Luis Suarez deal? Granted, they’ve already re-invested a lot of this money, but that shouldn’t put them off agreeing this transfer. What if Alberto Moreno has as much impact for Liverpool as the far more expensive Luke Shaw has at Manchester United?

It’s also worth noting that Liverpool struggled defensively last season. They conceded 50 Premier League goals, more or less throwing away their title chase. Moreno is good enough to help The Reds rectify this wrong. But he can only do this is Brendan Rodgers gambles on him.

Good full-backs are hard to come by, but Moreno certainly qualifies. Brendan Rodgers is aware of his talent, let’s just hope that he’s willing to splash the cash.
