Xabi AlonsoI’m sure that Liverpool fans will still have vivid memories of Xabi Alonso’s time at Anfield. The Spaniard made such an impact during his 5 years with the club, that he’s already regarded by some as a Liverpool legend.

It helps that he managed to leave the club under such good terms. The fact that his sale earned his club £30m also reflects well on Alonso, who’s now 32-years-old. He still speaks very highly of Liverpool  and seems to be a fan of the club.

Suffice to say, if Xabi Alonso were available at the right price, I’m sure that Liverpool fans would jump at the opportunity to have him back. They’d be foolish not to. Yes, he’s getting on a bit, but there’s still no doubting his talent, technique or his vision.

There are very few players in world football who can pull off the kind of passes that are a part of his armoury. His reading of the game is second to none.

With old age comes experience. He’s played in the Premier League (143 appearances in total for Liverpool), he’s made 158 appearances for Real Madrid and he’s earned 113 caps for the Spanish international side. The time he has spent at the top level of the game is quite remarkable. He’s a true veteran of European football.

As it happens, The Reds could have a shot at reacquiring Xabi this summer. According to The Metro, his boss Carlo Ancelotti is concerned over the player’s fitness (the source claims that he’s ‘lost too much weight) and as a result, may be willing to ‘listen to offers’.

It’s a bizarre story, but if it means that Liverpool will get their hands on a top level player, for a good price, I certainly won’t complain. Having lost Luis Suarez this summer, they need to flesh out their squad with all the world class talent they can find. Xabi certainly qualifies.

It can’t hurt to make a speculative bid, can it?

What’s you take? Can The Reds really attract Xabi Alonso back to Anfield?
