Mats HummelsCan anybody else see Manchester United’s devil may care attitude about the transfer market coming back to bite Louis Van Gaal on the butt?

Having snapped up both Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera early in the summer transfer window, things have slowed down to a crawl. I hope that The Red Devil’s excellent pre-season hasn’t blinded the club’s hierarchy to the weaknesses that are still prevalent within this squad.

For a start, Louis Van Gaal can’t really believe that his defense is ready for the oncoming campaign? Having lost both Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand this year, Manchester United desperately need to bring in another centre-back or two. Failure to do this could see them fall even further behind in the race for silverware.

Their sluggish approach to transfers has already seen them miss out on Arsenal’s Thomas Vermaelen, who’s now a Barcelona player. Let’s hope that Van Gaal’s next attempt to sign a defender is somewhat more successful.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Manchester United are making a last ditch attempt to sign Borussia Dortmund’s superstar centre-back Mats Hummels. The source claims that The Red Devils are readying a £30m bid for the 25-year-old.

Whatever way you cut it, £30m should be enough to pique Dortmund’s interest. Whether it’s enough to persuade them to sell remains to be seen. Manchester United fans will certainly be keeping their fingers crossed.

The World Cup winner would represent a significant upgrade on Thomas Vermaelen. He’s experienced at the top level (but still relatively young), he has Mertesacker’s positional awareness, he’s tough in the tackle and he’s a smart cookie. He’s not the quickest along the turf, but he’s more than able to make up for this with his other qualities.

It’s easy to see him making an immediately positive impact at Old Trafford. In the long-term, it’s not difficult to see him providing good value for his £30m price-tag. Let’s just hope that United’s last ditch attempt to sign him proves to be successful.

What’s your take? Can Manchester United persuade Borussia Dortmund to sell Mats Hummels?
