It’s been one of the summer’s longest running transfer sagas, but it looks like Liverpool are finally about to get their man.
A few days back The Daily Mail ran an article suggesting that Liverpool have agreed a £16m transfer fee for Sevilla’s highly-regarded young left back, Alberto Moreno.
The source even suggests that Sevilla have lined up a replacement: Sporting Lisbon’s Jefferson Nascimento.
If this news is true, then it looks like a real coup for The Reds and for Brendan Rodgers. Sevilla have been playing hard-ball all summer long. It’s thought that they were asking for £20m from Liverpool at one stage.
But Rodgers stood his ground and whittled down the La Liga sides’ asking price. This really does look like a smart bit of business.
By playing the waiting game, The Reds were able to draw out Moreno’s interest and make it clear to Sevilla that there wasn’t a lot of competition for the player’s signatures. As a result, Liverpool have the deal they wanted (or, more precisely, they’ve managed to seal a reasonable deal).
What’s surprising to me is that other clubs haven’t been in the running with Liverpool all along. After all, this is a player who already has 3 caps for an inordinately talented Spanish side, despite only being 22-years-old.
Last season he made 40 appearances for his La Liga club, helping to guide them to a fifth place finish and Europa League glory.
I’d argue that he’s up there with former Southampton star, Luke Shaw, who commanded a much bigger price-tag when he moved to Manchester United earlier this summer.
With The Reds in dire need of further defensive recruits, this looks like a smart signing. There’s just no telling how much Moreno will improve The Reds squad. He’s quick, he’s defensively astute and he’s got a great cross on him. Why wouldn’t Brendan Rodgers be interested?
Let’s just hope that the paper’s reports of this being a done deal aren’t too premature.
