Arsenal ready £30m bid: but is it enough to close the deal?

Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund)Arsenal already have two reliable centre-back options, but this is unlikely to be enough to see them through the next 12 months.

The Gunners’ little and large duo Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker have been in excellent form over the last year or so, working in tandem with one another, masking each other’s weaknesses and granting their side a solid platform to build on.

But if one of them picks up a long-term injury, or a suspension, The Gunners could be in serious trouble. Thomas Vermaelen has been out of form and fitness for quite some time. There’s also a good chance that he’ll be moving on this summer (Manchester United and Barcelona are both rumoured to be interested). Either way, he’s not a player that can be relied on.

Arsene Wenger has already made some astute signings this summer, but bringing in another centre-back looks like the next logical step.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Arsenal have ‘made an enquiry over the availability’ of Borussia Dortmund’s superstar centre-back, Mats Hummels. The German ace, World Cup winner and Manchester United target is quite the prospect. It’s exciting to see The Gunners continue to chase top level signings like this.

As expected, Mats Hummels wouldn’t come cheap. The aforementioned source states that a £30m bid may be enough to test Dortmund’s ‘resolve’. It could take even more than this if Jurgen Klopp decides to play hardball.

Still, if The Gunners have some extra cash to play with from having sold Thomas Vermaelen, reimbursing it on Mats Hummels looks like the smart play. At only 25-years-old, the lanky centre-back already has bag-loads of experience. He’s got 36 caps for the Germany international side and has made 227 appearances for Borussia Dortmund.

He’s physically tough, positions himself well and he works extremely hard. He could prove to be as important to Arsenal as Per Mertesacker currently is. Better still, he’s a long-term prospect. Make it happen Arsene Wenger!

What’s your take? Should The Gunners look to close this big money deal for Mats Hummels?
