Nigel De JongDespite having the World Cup serve as a distraction, Louis Van Gaal has already been able to pull of a couple of impressive signings. Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw are two big money signings that should serve to put Manchester United back on the map again. After their season from hell, Shaw and Herrera should help to re-ignite belief among their the clubs fan-base.

And with Louis Van Gaal in charge, who knows what Manchester United will be capable of next season? Things are suddenly starting to look up again for fans.

But Shaw and Herrera will probably need a little bit of help in steadying the Manchester United ship. A couple more signings wouldn’t go a miss.

For a start, I can’t help but feel that United’s more technical midfielders (players like Juan Mata, Adnan Januzaj and yes, Ander Herrera), could use a little more protection. If The Red Devils had a ‘midfield enforcer type’, the club’s slighter players would be gifted more time and space on the ball.

In other words, bringing in a defensive minded midfielder could actually serve to open up Manchester United in an attacking sense. This was a key issue with The Red Devils last season – they moved the ball about too slowly and their midfield didn’t provide good enough service into the strikers.

Perhaps Nigel De Jong could change this. According to The Mirror, ‘Van Gaal’ is ‘keen’ on ‘bringing the former City midifielder back to Manchester’. They even suggest that a £10m deal for the AC Milan ace could be on the cards.

That strikes me a good price for a player with so much Premier League experience. Better still, Van Gaal knows the player extremely well and will know what he can offer this Manchester United side. He’s tough, he’s strong in the tackle and he makes a large number of interceptions in every game.

He’s a player who loves to frustrate the opposition and I’m sure he’d endear himself to United fans fairly quickly. Given that he’s apparently available for just £10m, I’d say this is a no brainer. Make it happen Van Gaal!

What’s your take? Should Manchester United snap up this former Manchester City star?

Yes United should sign De Jong. We haven’t had a mid-field enforcer since Roy Keane and his performances in the world cup prove he is well and truly up to the challenge. His price is perfect allowing for his age but his abilities well out weight this valuation and would be a fantastic deal for United
