Arsenal fans will have been sad to see one of their key performers over the last half-decade or so, Bacary Sagna, leave the club this summer. The French right-back has more than earned his ‘Mr Consistent’ moniker. He never seemed to put a foot out of place whilst wearing an Arsenal shirt. He was hard-working, effective and smart. He’ll be severely missed.
It doesn’t help that The Gunners don’t have a ready-made replacement. Sure, Carl Jenkinson is waiting in the wings, but have we really seen enough of him yet? Can anybody really claim that he’s ready for the big time? I can’t help but feel that it would be a mistake if Arsene Wenger failed to bring in a new option this summer.
This brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that Arsenal are considering stepping up their interest in Newcastle United’s gifted French full-back, Mathieu Debuchy. The 28-year-old has also picked up links to Paris Saint Germain and Monaco, which is perhaps unsurprising given his nationality.
Whilst both Ligue 1 clubs have plenty of financial backing, a club like Arsenal is also likely to hold appeal for a player like Mathieu Debuchy. If he moved to North London, Debuchy would get Champions League action, the chance to compete for silverware and the chance to compete towards the top of the Premier League (a far more competitive league than Ligue 1).
Besides, it’s not like Arsenal are lacking in French connections, is it? I’m sure that Mathieu Debuchy would feel right at home at The Emirates.
The aforementioned source claims that Newcastle United have slapped a £12m price-tag on the French full-back. That’s a lot of money, but it’s probably a fair price for a player with so much experience in English football and on the international scene.
I’m not sure he’s as good as Bacary Sagna, but he’s younger and he’s got plenty of energy. That could make him an astute addition to this Arsenal squad.
