With Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand making untimely exits from the club, Manchester United are in a precarious position defensively. With David Moyes gone (not a moment too soon), it’s up to new boss Louis Van Gaal to steady the ship.
The choices he makes in this summer’s transfer market could come to define his time as Manchester United boss. If he doesn’t bring in the right defensive reinforcements, The Red Devils could end up stuck in their slumber.
This brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that Manchester United are on the trail of Ajax’s young defensive talent, Daley Blind. The source uses the headline, ‘Van Gaal ready to play a blinder’, which isn’t a bad effort, all in all.
The 23-year-old versatile defender may well have the ability to help Manchester United get back to their winning ways. He’s only young, but there’s no doubting that he’s a good reader of the game, who has all the qualities necessary to make it at the top level. Whilst he’s somewhat lacking in experience, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him make the step up.
He’s certainly due a shot. If Manchester United don’t snap him up, somebody else will. Louis Van Gaal may have to act quickly in this case.
Blind started off as a left-back, but has been converted into a defensive midfielder during his time with Ajax. As luck would have it, these are two positions that Manchester United need to fill. They need a left-back to replace the aging Patrice Evra (Luke Shaw and Leighton Baines have been linked in recent months) and they need a midfield enforcer type to help give players like Juan Mata and Shinji Kagawa more time on the ball.
Daley Blind’s flexibility could help to make him the perfect fit at Old Trafford. The aforementioned source suggests that he could be available for £12m. Given the size of United’s war-chest, this sum represents small change. Let’s just hope that Louis Van Gaal is willing to spare it.
