There’s simply no underestimating Bastian Schweinsteiger’s importance to Bayern Munich over the years. The right-footed central midfielder is one of the best players in the world, known for his energy, his smart runs and utilitarian use of the ball. He’s known as the ‘midfield mastermind’ for a reason. He’s a great all-rounder capable of competing (and excelling) at any part of the game.
That’s why he’s managed to make a total of 473 appearances for Bayern Munich, more than earning his vice-captaincy role. During this time he’s chipped in with 63 goals and countless assists.
All this makes it difficult to believe that he could be available for just £20m. But that’s what The Mirror claim. The source suggests that Louis Van Gaal is upset to have missed out on Bayern Munich star Thomas Muller (who recently agreed a new contract with the German Champions) and will now turn his attention to his team-mate, Bastian.
Whilst Muller is more of a natural goal-scorer, Bastian Schweinsteiger will be able to contribute in other ways. He certainly has the leadership skills necessary to help Manchester United get back on the path to glory. It’d be odd to see him in a Manchester United shirt, but there’s no doubting that it would be exciting.
In recent months there has been some speculation regarding Schweinsteiger’s role in this Bayern Munich side. Some feel that his playing style doesn’t really gel with the way his manager, Pep Guardiola, likes to set up his team. I’m not sure that’s really the case, but it’s interesting to debate nonetheless.
In 2012/13, Bastian Schweinsteiger played 45 games for Bayern. Last season, he only made 36 appearances. The player himself may well feel that the time’s right to accept a new challenge. If that’s the case, I’m sure he could be tempted to move to Manchester United, who are still one of the biggest clubs on this planet.
Whether Bayern Munich will be prepared to sell for just £20m remains to be seen, but it’s certainly worth testing the waters.
