It looks like one of Brendan Rodger’s biggest priorities this summer is adding a bit of sparkle to his midfield.
With Steven Gerrard getting on in years and both Philippe Coutinho and Jordan Henderson still developing, there’s certainly room in this Liverpool squad for another talented midfielder.
That’s surely why they’ve spent so long on the hunt for Southampton captain Adam Lallana. Unfortunately that particular link seems to have gone cold. I’d say it’s about time for Liverpool to start looking at other options.
Other options like Benfica’s talented young midfielder, Lazar Markovic. The super Serb is only 20-years-old, but he’s still managed to make 48 appearances for the Primeira Liga side last season. He’s clearly very well thought of in Portugal. How long until he becomes a household name in the UK?
He’s still got room to develop, but it’s not like he’s currently ineffective. Last season he scored 7 goals and made 4 assists. If he continues to develop at the same rate then he’s sure to make an impact at Anfield.
As The Mirror report, The Reds have been interested in Lazar Markovic for a number of months now. At one stage the player was valued at £30m, but he could now be available for just £25m.
That’s still a lot of money, but it’s probably fair value for a player who’s clearly going places. This could prove to be a good investment for Liverpool.
The source also claims that Markovic is ‘willing to come’ to Anfield. This deal is beginning to look like Liverpool’s to lose.
Markovic is a player who’s capable of helping The Reds compete towards the top of the Premier League table. They came so close last season, that a big signing like this could help to tip them over the edge and towards glory. With Brendan Rodgers leading the way, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it happen.
