MirandaWhen it became clear that both Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand would be leaving Manchester United this summer, fans started to worry. These are two of The Red Devils most experienced footballers and they both happen to play in the same position. Their absence will leave a gaping hole in the middle of the club’s defense.

They won’t be easy to replace. New Manchester United boss Louis Van Gaal has his work cut out here. Let’s hope that he’s up to the challenge.

According to The Daily Mail, The Red Devils are hot on the trail of Atletico Madrid defender, Joao Miranda. The experienced Brazilian centre-back has been in fantastic form this season, helping to lead his club to the La Liga title.

Whilst he may have been a part of the tightest defense in Spain, he didn’t manage to make it into the Brazil international side for the World Cup. I’m sure that he was hugely disappointed not to have made the cut. Moreover, I’m sure that he’s wondering what more he could have done to earn his place.

Perhaps he’s started to wonder if he needs to make a move to a bigger club (or at least a club with a bigger reputation). Perhaps this is why he’s started to pick up links to Manchester United.

Interestingly enough, there appears to be some reality to the rumours. Check out these quotes from the player himself:

“I have received several offers and we are negotiating. ‘I have offers from the Spanish and English leagues, and other competitions. My agent is currently in Europe, resolving my future. My buy-out clause with Atletico Madrid is 30m, but that is negotiable.”

It’s telling that he’s willing to talk so openly about his current situation. It shows a certain lack of respect for Atletico and a certain willingness to embrace a new challenge. He also highlights his release clause and hints that his club may be willing to negotiate a lower fee. It reads a little bit like a ‘come get me’ plea.

So let’s hope that Manchester United heed his call. They have a clear and pressing need in this area and Joao Miranda looks like the perfect solution.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United swoop in for this Brazilian ace?
