Bastian SchweinsteigerSince Louis Van Gaal has taken over at Old Trafford, Manchester United can’t seem to stop getting linked to Bayern Munich players. Over the last six months The Red Devils appear to have been chasing Toni Kroos, Arjen Robben, Mario Gotze and Thomas Muller. But the most intriguing link of all is Bastian Schweinsteiger. After all, the man is a living legend and the embodiment of a one club man. Surely Manchester United couldn’t pull off a deal of this scale?

Surely Manchester United couldn’t bring the midfield mastermind to Old Trafford?

Whilst pessimism has abounded, this hasn’t stopped fans from crossing their fingers. Luckily, these fans are about to get some good news.

According to The Mirror, Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola ‘wants to sell’ Bastian Schweinsteiger. That’s right. Pep’s willing to put a player who has made 473 appearances for the German champions out to pasture. Ruthless, isn’t he?

They’ve built the story out from quotes that originated with Spanish journalist Graham Hunter. Here’s what he had to say: “Pep Guardiola does want to move Schweinsteiger on. He feels Schweinsteiger doesn’t move the ball quickly enough for the brand of football he’s trying to implicate.”

This strikes me as an odd claim. Yes Schweinsteiger is getting on in years (he’s not 29-years-old), but he’s still one of Bayern’s best players. He’s more than capable of moving the ball about quickly and doesn’t really look out of place in a Pep Guardiola side. I’d argue that he’s more important to Bayern Munich than Mario Gotze is, for instance.

Regardless, Manchester United could well profit from Bayern’s error of judgement. There’s no word as to how much Schweinsteiger might cost, but he probably falls within The Red Devil’s financial wheelhouse. If Louis Van Gaal is interested, he might just be able to close the deal.

The thought of Schweinsteiger playing alongside Juan Mata is somewhat mouthwatering. Surely with these two world-class midfielders playing alongside each other, Manchester United can’t fail to impress next year?

What’s your take? Can Manchester United really afford to compete for Bastian Schweinsteiger? Will Bayern Munich be willing to sell?
