Alvaro MorataWith Arsenal on the hunt for a striker this summer, it’s been a little odd to see them get linked so strongly to Real Madrid striker, Alvaro Morata. After all, the fleet-footed centre-forward has only scored 8 goals in 23 La Liga appearances this season. That’s hardly a scintillating return now, is it?

But let’s look at the young lads plus points. For a start, he’s only 21-years-old. The fact that he’s even getting into the Real Madrid first team at a young age is impressive. It shows that he has the trust of the head coach and the ability to make a mark at the top level.

And whilst his scoring record hasn’t been great, it’s also a little deceptive. Most of Morata’s appearances have come as a substitute, which means he hasn’t actually had too many minutes on the pitch. The Spanish ace has actually scored a goal every 72 minutes this season which isn’t bad at all.

But he’s not just a goal-scorer. He’s 6 foot 3 inches tall, great in the air and capable with the ball at his feet. He links up well with his midfield and clearly has a good footballing brain. There’s a good chance that he’s going to develop into something very special indeed over the coming years. Why wouldn’t a club like Arsenal be interested?

According to The Mirror, Arsene Wenger has spoken ‘directly’ with Zinedine Zidane, in a ‘desperate’ (interesting choice of words) attempt to close a deal for Morata. The source claims that Real Madrid are willing to sell for £25m. They may also be prepared to let him go for a smaller fee, but only if a buy-back clause is written into his contract.

I certainly hope Arsenal avoid the latter option. What if Morata develops into one of world football’s best players and then The Gunners have to let him go back to La Liga on the cheap? That would be soul destroying.

On the other hand, it would be difficult to justify spending £25m on Alvaro Morata. Let’s hope that Arsenal’s negotiation team are ready to work their socks off this summer. If The Gunners are to close this deal, it’ll take a fair amount of blood, sweat and tears.

What’s your take? Should The Gunners continue to chase Alvaro Morata?

I do not see Wenger paying that much (£25m) for an upcoming and untested player when he can either get Etoo for free, Benzema for pay £30m or Remy for £8m who will hit te ground running immediately.
