Are The Gunners chasing the right £15m target?

If I were to tell you that Arsenal have picked up a link to a German named ‘Bender’, you’d probably respond with something like, ‘yeah I know, Lars Bender. Tell me something I don’t know, Grandpa!’. But guess what, you’d have totally, unforgivably over-stepped the mark, in a quite an embarrassing fashion.

Not only am I full of youthful vigour, but you and I are both talking about completely different Benders. Whilst The Gunners have been strongly linked to Bayer Leverkusen’s Lars Bender for quite some time, it’s Borussia Dortmund’s Sven Bender that we’re focusing on here.

To complicate matters, these Benders happen to be be twin brothers. I guess it makes sense for Arsenal to be interested in the both of them. Regardless, The Mirror claim that Sven is now Arsenal’s ‘main target’ and that he could cost the club around £15m.

Sven is a decent player who has had his fair share of bad luck this season. He picked up a long-term injury early on this year and has thus missed out on a place in Germany’s World Cup squad. As such, he won’t be adding to the 7 caps he has already collected.

Still, Sven was a key part of the Borussia Dortmund side who made it to the Champions League final last year. He’s clearly a very talented individual.

He plays in the holding role in front of defenders, providing protection and initiating moves from the back. He’s an astute and diligent defender who works hard, contributes well and would surely be a decent addition for The Gunners.

Both Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini aren’t getting any younger. It really wouldn’t surprise me if Arsene Wenger were to look to bolster this position in the summer. Whilst The Gunners have more pressing priorities (like signing a world class striker), bringing in another defensive midfielder is sure to help with the shape of the team.

Whilst I’m not sure that this is an essential signing, it certainly looks like a good one.
