Act now or miss out: why Liverpool should sign this £18m talent

AlberMorenoAfter conceding 50 Premier League goals last season, it’s clear that Liverpool need to assess their defense this summer. Brendan Rodgers will have his work cut out for him if he’s looking to build a defense that’s capable of competing for the Premier League title next season.

So what are we to make of The Mirror‘s claim that Liverpool are ready to play ‘hard ball’ when it comes to their ‘number one defensive target’ Alberto Moreno? Is this a risk that The Reds simply can’t afford to take?

We all know that Liverpool’s attack is capable of carrying the team for large parts of the season. But Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge alone aren’t enough to lead The Reds to silverware. To get to this point Liverpool will need to a fix their leaky defense. That’s where players like Moreno come in.

The 21-year-old Sevilla left-back is one of the best young defensive talents in the world. He’s known for his pace up and down the flanks, his willingness to get forward and support attacks, his crossing ability and his tenacity. Whilst certain aspects of his game still need work (he’s a little weaker defensively than he is offensively), he’s positively oozing with potential.

There’s a reason why he’s earned an £18m price-tag.

Still, you can see why Brendan Rodgers may be reluctant to spend big on a player who’s still relatively inexperienced. He’s played 45 times for Sevilla and has 3 caps for the Spanish international team. Whilst he’s full of promise, he hasn’t had too many opportunities to impress on a big stage just yet.

The aforementioned source claims that Liverpool and Sevilla have been locked in talks for the last couple of weeks, but that Brendan Rodgers and co. are unwilling to meet the Spanish club’s asking price.

As a result, Rodgers runs the risk of another club swooping in and snapping up one of his key targets. Just because Liverpool are unwilling to spend, doesn’t mean that other clubs will be.

I can’t help but feel that Liverpool need to capitalise on the success of last season. To do this, they’ll need to sign players like Alberto Moreno. Failure to bring in players of this quality could result in The Reds sliding back down the Premier League.

And that would be a significantly higher price to pay, than the proposed £18m for Alberto Moreno.

What’s your take? Should Liverpool cough up the £18m necessary to sign this ace left-back?

ricardo rodrigeuz is more suitable than alberto moreno, both going forward & defending bt it need right back be reverted since you need balance on defence so flannagan is good fill right back void, centre back if ilori, coates & wisdom can be give time to express themselve it can be the best for the 3 young defenders & be played in right positions
