Would this Premier League ace be the perfect Liverpool target?

Steven CaulkerWhilst Liverpool’s title charge has been significantly derailed by Chelsea’s 2-0 victory last weekend, The Reds’ efforts this season should be applauded. What they’ve achieved this year using expansive, exciting attacking football is quite remarkable.

But I do think it should be pointed out that this is not a particularly well-rounded team. Whilst they’re an attacking marvel, they lack balance and they seem to have a soft-centre. Jose Mourinho, the sly old fox that he is, exploited this and then some. It was a masterclass in how to play against a team like Liverpool.

With The Reds in the Champions League next season, they’ll need to learn how to handle this kind of performances on a more regular basis. In particular, they’ll need to defend better in big games.

According to The Mirror, Brendan Rodgers already has his eyes set on a target. The player in question is Cardiff City centre-back, Steven Caulker. Yes, he just moved to The Bluebirds last season as part of a £9m deal, but I’d say he’s already ready to make another step up in quality.

Of course, Rodgers knows the player well: he was in charge of Swansea City whilst the English centre-back was out on loan from Tottenham. This season Caulker seems to have kicked his development up a gear. He’s made 37 appearances for Cardiff City and has found the back of the net 5 times. Not a bad return for a 22-year-old.

There will be those who will wonder, with their pre-existing defensive issues, why would The Reds chase a defender who’s current plying his trade at a club at the bottom of the Premier League table? In response to these concerns, it’s worth noting that Caulker has probably been The Bluebirds’ stand-out player this season.

As The Mirror notes, Caulker won’t come cheap, but he looks like a good investment for Liverpool. He has Premier League experience at a young age and plenty of quality to boot. Sign him up Brendan!

What’s your take? Should Liverpool consider moving in for Steven Caulker? Are there other options out there who would prove to be a better fit?
