Despite all the distinguishing circumstances, this kind of return is unacceptable for a striker at a top club. Yes he’s young, yes he’s sometimes been played out wide and yes he likes to track back and support the midfield, but that’s no excuse for scoring less than a goal every four games. Especially not at an attacking minded club like Manchester United.
He’s only 23-years-old, but he doesn’t appear to be progressing very fast. There’s been a lot of speculation that he’s not happy with the amount of game time he’s getting at Old Trafford and that he fancies a move to a new club.
The Mirror even claim that ‘he could be attracted to a move to Arsenal or Everton’, before slapping a £20m price-tag on the youngster’s head. I wonder what Arsenal fans make of this particular story.
First things first: Arsenal are seriously short of options upfront. Lukas Podolski has been forced out wide, whilst Theo Walcott has been injured all season long. That’s left Olivier Giroud to do a job more or less alone. He’s done okay, but it’s clear that The Gunners need a little more firepower in this department.
Which if why I find it hard to believe that they’d target Danny Welbeck, especially if he’s going to cost £20m. Arsene Wenger knows how to bargain hunt. He’ll be able to bring in a striker from Europe with a decent record for that kind of price. Isn’t Loic Remy available?
Welbeck has Premier League experience, but he doesn’t have a record to suggest that he’d be able to help Arsenal spring back up the table next season. If Everton are genuinely interested, then I’d suggest that Arsenal let them at him.
The fact that Manchester United, who have been abysmal this season, are willing to let him go says it all. Arsenal need to start aiming higher.
