Is this £20m Dutch ace the answer for Manchester United?

Other the last couple of transfer windows, Manchester United have spent a lot of money trying to fix their midfield. David Moyes brought in both Marouane Fellaini and Juan Mata, but only the latter has shown signs that he’s got what it takes to help elevate The Red Devils.

Still, you can’t help but feel that if Manchester United are going to work their way back up the Premier League table, they’ll need to make another addition in this area of the pitch. They still need a little more craft, endeavour and invention in the centre-of-the-park.

This brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that Manchester United are weighing up a £20m move for Roma’s midfield maestro, Kevin Strootman. That’s right, the same Kevin Strootman who United targeted last summer before he completed his £15m move from PSV to Roma.

If he’s gone up in value since then, it’s because he’s had an excellent season. He’s made 33 appearances for Roma, has found the back of the net 7 times and has also accrued 6 assists. He recorded similar figures at his last couple of seasons at PSV and at just 24-years-old, it’s clear that he’s a talented individual.

He’s mostly deployed as a box-to-box midfielder in Serie A, but he loves to chip in with defensive duties, support his team-mates and get involved with build-up play. He doesn’t shirk responsibility and always seems to be at the heart of his team’s best moments. That’s why he’s able to justify his current price-tag.

I certainly like the sound of him slotting in alongside Juan Mata. These two could well form the kind of partnership that helps Manchester United to get back to their best next season. That’s why I’d like to see whoever takes the reigns at Old Trafford add Kevin Strootman to his transfer wishlist.

The Red Devils are sure to be busy this summer, but if they make the right decisions when the transfer window re-opens, who knows what they’ll be capable of?
