Would this £50m splurge be a step forward for Liverpool?

Dejan LovrenThe season has only just come to a close, but already the transfer rumours are starting to roll in. The Reds came agonizingly close to winning the Premier League title this season and you can bet that Brendan Rodgers is already masterminding a means to help his side come back even stronger next year.

Who knows, if the right personnel are brought in during the summer transfer market, perhaps they’ll be able to win the damn thing next time round? Coming close is all well and good, but Arsenal fans will be able to testify that it feels a whole let better to have a trophy in your hands, than something immaterial like a top four finish.

This brings me to a Football Talk article that details some of Liverpool’s (potential) summer spending plans. The source claims that the club’s key targets are Southampton’s Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren and Bayern Munich’s Xherdan Shaqiri. This triple-threat could set The Reds back as much as £50m. Change doesn’t come cheap, does it?

This news is exciting because all three players cover a specific need within this Liverpool squad.

Let’s start with the most obvious ‘need’. The Reds need to sort out their defense. They’ve conceded 50 goals this season (more than any other top four side) and have a tendency to make costly errors. The 3-3 draw against Crystal Palace was completely unacceptable.

24-year-old Croatian centre-back Dejan Lovren will add some much needed class to The Reds back-four. He could prove to be the most important signing that Brendan Rodgers makes this summer.

The Reds also need to add some threat down the wings. The Victor Moses experiment failed, but Xherdan Shaqiri would represent a significant step up. The wing-wizard has scored 7 goals this season in only 26 starts. He’s desperate for game time and Liverpool would represent a good fit.

Finally, Liverpool need to start thinking about finding a replacement for Steven Gerrard, who’s now 33-years-old. Here’s where Adam Lallana enters the picture. The 26-year-old is one of the most gifted footballers of this current crop of England stars, with excellent technical ability, an eye for a pass and plenty of goal threat (he’s scored 10 times this season).

Whilst he’s not quite as combative as Stevie G, there’s every reason to believe that he could go on to be a Liverpool legend.

It won’t be easy for Brendan Rodgers to persuade the board to spend £50m on new players, but these three certainly look like great additions. Let’s hope that Rodgers is at his persuasive best this summer.

What’s your take? Would this trio help take Liverpool Football Club to the next level?

Simple answer? No. Not whilst S’oton are trying a rip-off deal re Lallana and Lovren. They agreed the previous Lallana deal with an added sell-on clause and they are trying to simply avoid it by inflating the price to Liverpool ( knowing that LFC are suckers for over-paying for their players.
Lovrens came last year for £8 and they double the price. Rip-off so let some other fall for it.
