Why Liverpool should snap up this £5m bargain:

Michel VormLiverpool’s defense has been the subject of a fair amount of criticism over the last month or so. Whilst their attack (i.e. Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge) have been doing their job all season long, The Reds back-four hasn’t been nearly as effective.

Brendan Rodgers will look back on the 2-0 defeat against Chelsea and the 3-3 draw against Crystal Palace as the moments when The Reds title-charge came to an untimely end. If Liverpool had been better prepared defensively, perhaps they could have hung in there for a little longer.

The likes of Kolo Toure, Aly Cissokho and Jose Enrique have come under heavy criticism this season. Even Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel, two experienced Premier League centre-backs, have churned out the occasional bad performance this year. But what about Liverpool’s current number one, Simon Mignolet?

The former Sunderland stopper moved to Anfield last summer as part of a £9m move. He has since made 39 appearances for The Reds including a few Man of the Match performances (1-0 against Stoke City early on in the season, 1-0 against Manchester United and 2-2 against Swansea City).

Unfortunately he’s also been wildly inconsistent. Yes, he’s capable of some jaw-dropping saves, but sometimes his reaction speed doesn’t look up to snuff. I can’t be the only one who thinks that he could be a little more commanding in the penalty area?

It looks like Brendan Rodgers has noticed this too. According to The Daily Mail, The Reds are currently weighing up a move for Swansea City’s Michel Vorm. It’s thought that the Dutch stopper could be available for as little as £5m. That strikes me as a bargain for a keeper who was widely regarded as one of the best in the League a year or so back.

His stock has dipped slightly (along with Swansea City’s form), but it’s clear that he’s still a quality option. Most importantly, he’s good enough to push Simon Mignolet and challenge for his place in the first team.

It’s a deal that won’t break the bank, but would provide plenty of utility for The Reds. In fact, as Brendan Rodgers looks ahead to all the football that’s to come next season (including Champions League action!), he may well view this deal as essential.

What’s your take? Should Liverpool be looking for a second choice keeper? Would Michel Vorm be a good option?

Jose Enrique hasn’t played at all this season.

I must admit I was very impressed with the young goalkeeper at Doncaster, he is currently on loan from Man Utd but looks a good prospect, similar statue to the great Ray Clemence (best goalkeeper we ever had) or Marshall from Cardiff we need someone with a bit more height than Vorm as good a ‘keeper as he is, he’s smaller than Mignlolet

Mignolet is not strong enough to be Liverpool’s first choice keeper. He does not control his defenders at all. He is always too scared to come off his line and gather a cross, and he seems to always try and punch a ball away instead of catching it. We need a stonger, more commanding keeper if we want to win the league!

There’s an old saying in football, for each player you sign you set yourself back a year while they adapt to the team, life etc.. so anyone suggesting more than 5/6 first team signings doesn’t quite have a grasp of the situation. We only NEED a LB, CB, CM, LW & FWD for the first team. A GK, youth & U21 signings are an added bonus either to promote competition or add squad depth for the four competitions we’ll be playing in. But a lot of that squad depth will come from our own loanees & U21s imo & not from new signings.

Therefore, i’d like Moreno, Papadopoulos, Rakitic, Konoplyanka/Iturbe & Firmino for the first team.

Musacchio & Erkin can be signed for free to add quality depth & competition to our defence.

We also have a commitment to player developmemt which is why i see our squad depth coming in the form of our loanees & U21s but imo, we need to maintain & strenghten that by signing several young stars such as Andy Polo, Seung Woo Lee, Ryan Gauld, Zakaria Bakkali, Viktor Fischer, Mateo Kovacic, Alen Halilovic, Ricardo Centurion, Lucas Ocampos, Adam Maher, Will Hughes, Dele Alli, Valon Berisha, Jamaal Lecelles & Raphael Varane. All are excellent prospects who would thrive in our accademy or under BR’s tutorlidge & i’d love to see us continue to purchase youngsters of this callibre to secure our future under FFP.

Of course, we’ll need a clear out & imo Jones, Reina, Cissokho, Coates, Moses, Assaidi & Aspas should be sold or released. Decisions need to be made on Adorjan & Ngoo who aren’t developing as anticipated & don’t fit into our style of play respectively. Every other player needs to be retained until next summers clearout to give us a large & competitive squad to use on four fronts.
