Whilst Brendan Rodgers is sure to spend most of the summer trying to sort out his leaky defense, I’m sure he won’t completely neglect his attack. That’s the part of his team that has really excelled this year, after all. To ignore it and to let complacency slip in would be a mistake.
It’s hard to imagine a team with Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge leading the line ever lacking threat, but I think it’s fair to say that Liverpool could use a bit more cut and thrust down the wings.
Sure, Raheem Sterling has done a mighty good job over the last six or so months, but beyond him, Liverpool lack options in this department. Victor Moses impressed nobody this season, so Brendan Rodgers will have to look elsewhere for a wing-wizard type.
This brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that Liverpool are looking to close a ‘cut-price’ deal for Bayern Munich winger, Xherdan Shaqiri. He’s only been in the Bundesliga for 18 months, but if The Reds have their way, his stay won’t get any longer.
Bayern Munich spent £10m on the Swiss sensation and the aforementioned source claim that Liverpool would need to match this fee. That’s a bargain for a player with so much potential. Shaqiri has a good goal-scoring record and at just 22-years-old, he’s only likely to get better. Now’s the perfect time for Liverpool to swoop in and tempt him away.
Given his current status at the Allianz Arena, I can’t help but wonder if Shaqiri would have his head turned by The Reds’ advances. He’s only played 26 times this season and many of those appearances were as a substitute. Yes, he’s managed to chip in with 7 goals, but I’m sure he’ll feel like he wants more game time and more opportunities to contribute.
He’s still young and he’s still developing, so he can’t afford to rest on his laurels. Liverpool can offer him regular game time and a chance to compete for silverware. Who can say fairer than that? Make it happen Brendan!
