Liverpool target ‘keen’ on big club move: Should Rodgers swoop in?

With Liverpool coming so close to their first League title in 24 years, I’m sure fans will want to see their team come back even stronger next term. If they add a bit of bit more flair and a bit more muscle to their squad, who knows what they’ll be capable of? Maybe they’ll be the ones pipping Manchester City to the post next time around?

This brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that The Reds have ‘reportedly’ been holding talks with Queens Park Rangers’ Loic Remy over a move to Anfield. They go as far as to suggest that Remy is ‘keen’ on a move and that The Reds are already in discussions with the player’s representatives. It looks like this one’s moving pretty quickly, doesn’t it?

At first glance, it’s difficult to understand why Liverpool are currently pursuing a striker. After all, they’ve currently got two of the Premier League’s best options among their ranks: Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge. SaS have proven to be impossible to deal with over the last 12 months and if Brendan Rodgers can keep them both fit next year, I’m sure The Reds will launch another title tilt.

But that’s a pretty big ‘if’. If one of them picks up a long-term injury, or gets a long-term suspension, Liverpool could find themselves with their pants down. We also saw last season that the club’s reserve options just aren’t up to snuff.

Loic Remy, on the other hand, is the real deal. Whilst at loan with Newcastle this season, the fleet-footed striker has scored 14 goals in 27 games this season. Considering that the Magpies have been a little off colour over the last 12 or so months, this is an impressive return.

There’s no word as to how much Remy might cost, but it’s unlikely that he will fall outside of Liverpool’s transfer budget. Let’s just hope that Brendan Rodgers has enough money left over to bring in a high-quality centre-back option (or two).
