Are Manchester United’s three key transfer targets up to snuff?

Arjen RobbenWith Louis van Gaal now in charge at Manchester United, it’ll be interesting to see how quickly he takes action in the transfer market. He’ll be well aware of all the problems within the squad and I’m sure he’ll be keen to spend some cash to try and right the wrongs. Who he’ll bring in is anybody’s guess, but the English Press hasn’t been shy when it comes to providing links.

This brings me nicely to The Mirror‘s claim that Van Gaal has three ‘prime’ targets on his transfer wish-list and that they’re all currently playing in the Bundesliga. The players are Bayern Munich’s deadly duo, Arjen Robben and Thomas Muller and Borussia Dortmund’s star centre-back, Mats Hummels. Van Gaal’s aiming big, isn’t he?

I don’t believe for a second that Bayern would even entertain selling both Robben and Muller (given their respective importance to the German Champions), but I’d love to see United make a speculative bid or two. These aren’t just two of the best midfielders in Germany, they’re two of the best midfielders in the world.

Arjen Robben has scored a remarkable 21 goals this season, whilst Muller has chipped in with 26 finishes. It’s easy to see what they’d offer this Manchester United side.

Whilst The Red Devils current crop of wingers have been disappointing all season long, these two would represent a significant step up. If Manchester United can secure the signature of one of these Bayern Munich aces, they’re sure to come back a lot stronger.

Then there’s Mats Hummels who’s already a Dortmund legend at just 25-years-old. He’s made 221 appearances for the club and has impressed with his positional nous, aerial dominance and tough-tackling. At 6 foot 4 inches tall, he’s an absolute giant and he’d add some serious pedigree to United’s defense.

With Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic on their way out of Old Trafford, signing Mats Hummels could be a damn near essential summer move on the part of Louis Van Gaal.

At the moment, these are just three names that have seemingly been plucked out of the blue by The Press. If United can get their hands on just one of them, however, things are sure to be significantly different for The Red Devils next year.

What’s your take? Who should be on Manchester United’s transfer wish-list this summer?

United always seem to be linked with everybody yet end up signing nobody!
Even this website is linking United with 3 players who have already declared they will NOT be coming to Old Trafford!
United seem to be outcasts when it comes to signing top quality players and the big question is WHY?
Fabrigas is yet again boringly, being mentioned but what are the odds he will turn United down for the umpteenth time?
A vast number of top line players have all been mentioned in the newspapers, football websites and forums but as yet, NONE of those players has committed to United and even now Luke Shaw, a ‘given’ according to many is having 2nd thoughts!
If Van Gaal and his considerable reputation in football cannot persuade top players to come to Old Trafford then United have a very serious problem and one which if not counteracted could well see them lose their standing in the Premier League if not in Europe too!
Time surely for United to concentrate on players who have not yet reached ‘star’ status and forget the Fabrigas’s of this world, otherwise attracting players to Old Trafford will become an annoying and frustrating way of life!
