Now that Louis Van Gaal is officially in charge at Old Trafford, he’s got an awful lot of work to do in order to steady the Manchester United ship. David Moyes has left the club in such a bad state that it’s almost impossible to see how they can get back to their usual silverware winning ways.
But not everything that David Moyes did was a mistake. Whilst his excursions in the transfer market were (on the large part) disappointing, it did look like he was working towards some exciting deals this summer. We’re talking about the kind of deals that have may have put Manchester United back on the path to glory.
The Mirror claim that Moyes was ‘well advanced’ in a £20m deal for Bayern Munich’s Toni Kroos. That’s exciting news considering his ability. The young German international is one of Bayern’s most important players and for him to be available for just £20m (or a figure near to this), is quite remarkable.
Unfortunately, what the source gives with one hand, it takes away with the other. They claim that Van Gaal has no interest in Kroos and has knocked the German off of his transfer wish-list. It’s suggested that Van Gaal is keen to carve out a different path from the one that David Moyes was embarking on.
In this case, it strikes me as a mistake. Toni Kroos has been a member of Bayern Munich’s first team since he was just 17-years-old. He’s now 24-years-old and continues to improve on a season-by-season basis. With his prominence for club and country (42 caps), it’s clear that he’s the real deal.
It strikes me that he’d fit in nicely at Old Trafford, because he’d offer something a little different than either Juan Mata or Marouane Fellaini. Kroos is a box-to-box midfielder who works extremely hard, rarely loses the ball and rarely makes a mistake.
Whilst he’s not a natural goal scorer, he’s often a major part of Bayern Munich’s best moves.
I can only hope that Louis Van Gaal has a change of heart. Kroos strikes me as being exactly what Manchester United need at this moment in time. Let’s hope that they don’t miss out.
