Aaron LennonHere’s a rumour I didn’t expect to see any time soon: according to The Express, Manchester United are in the market for Tottenham’s lightening quick winger, Aaron Lennon.

Of course the same source suggests that Manchester United have a ‘£300m war-chest’ to spend this summer, so we’ll take their claims with a pinch of salt. £300m, really? Why are United chasing Lennon when they could be chasing Lionel Messi?

But let’s get back to the aforementioned rumour, which must be one of the strangest of recent times. Could Aaron Lennon really become a Manchester United star this summer?

The Red Devils have received a lot of flack this season and have been guilty of a number of lacklustre performances. A large part of this is due to the club’s lack of cut and thrust down the wings. One way or another, Nani, Ashley Young, Antonio Valencia and Shinji Kagawa just haven’t been producing the goods.

There’s a good chance that one-or-two of these wing-wizards will be moving on in the summer. What’s more, Ryan Giggs is likely to retire. This will leave Manchester United with a deficit that they will need to fill.

According to The Express, David Moyes isn’t just interested in Aaron Lennon. He’s willing to swap Javier Hernandez for him this summer. If this swap deal were to go ahead, I can’t help but feel that it would be United getting the short end of the stick.

Hernandez hasn’t had much of a look in this season (he’s started just 11 games), but surely he’s a better squad player than Aaron Lennon would be at Manchester United?

Theo Walcott is often accused of lacking a footballing brain, but next to Lennon, he’s the footballing equivalent of Albert Einstein. He’s made 20 appearances for Spurs this season and has scored just a single goal. In fact, in 335 appearances for the North London side, he’s scored just 30 goals. I fail to see how he’d be a step-up on The Red Devil’s current options.

He’s not even a nailed-on starter in Tottenham’s current line-up. There’s little reason to believe he’d be treated any differently at Old Trafford. Javier Hernandez, on the other hand, could take up a more significant role in the side as the likes of Robin Van Persie get older.

So let’s hope that David Moyes steers well clear.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United move ahead with this proposed swap deal?

Wouldn’t do that swap. I’d much rather keep Lennon than get Herrnandez, wouldn’t want to lose Lennon although if it was for Phil Jones then it would be far more interesting. Goodness only knows why United have played him so few times at CB this season
