ander-herrera_2657922bDesperate times call for desperate measures and things are getting fairly desperate at Old Trafford. After losing Sir Alex Ferguson last summer, The Red Devils have been through the season from hell. High profile losses to clubs like Liverpool, Manchester City and Everton have left Manchester United’s credibility in tatters.

It’s difficult to see how the club is going to turn things around. They’ve already spent big money on players like Marouane Fellaini and Juan Mata and it doesn’t seem to have made the blindest bit of difference. Still, that doesn’t mean it’s time to give up. If Manchester United throw enough money at the problem, surely they’ll find a solution?

According to sources like Caught Offside, that’s exactly Manchester United’s plan. The club has some high-profile targets in mind and they’ve got the cash to tempt them away from their current clubs.

One of these players is Ander Herrera, a long-term Manchester United target, who currently plays for Athletic Bilbao. You may remember Herrera from last summer; he was the player at the centre of Manchester United’s ‘impostor scandal’.

More importantly, he’s a tidy midfielder. The 24-year-old is supremely comfortable on the ball, carries it forward well and is able to pick out a killer pass. The box-to-box midfield maestro has made 35 appearances for Bilbao this season and is recognized as one of their most important players. He’s also got 5 caps for the Spanish U23s and there’s a good chance that he’ll feature for the full international side at some stage in the future.

As such, he’s unlikely to come cheap. In fact, the aforementioned source claims that Bilbao’s asking price is £37m. This is the same fee that’s written into the player’s contract as a release clause. If United offer this much, Bilbao will have little choice but to sell up.

This is a lot of money, even for a cash-rich side like Manchester United. It’d probably be worth testing the waters with a few smaller bids, but I certainly hope that the club sticks with this one. Herrera has already proven his talent at a young age and could be exactly what The Red Devils need to turn their fortunes around.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United continue to pursue Ander Herrera? Is it time to look at other options?
