‘I want him to join Arsenal’: Should Wenger sign this Spanish ace?

Here’s a turn up for the books. The Metro recently ran an article with quotes from Arsenal’s talented midfielder, Santi Cazorla, who spoke about trying to lure Spanish goal keeper, Iker Casillas to the Emirates. Check them out:

‘I’ve told Iker I would like him to join Arsenal. His situation is very difficult but he has to make a decision. Lots of clubs want him, including Arsenal.’

At 32-years-old, the one time Real Madrid great is beginning to find himself increasingly out of favour at the Bernabeu. If the right offer came in, I can’t help but wonder if he’d jump at the opportunity for a change in scenery.

Arsenal have had their defensive issues this season, but I’m not sure that they have sprung from the current goalkeeper.

The troubles tend to arise when Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny aren’t playing together. The little and large French and German duo are Arsenal’s best options in the centre-back department and without them the club often looks a little over-exposed.

I’d also argue that Arsenal’s defense just isn’t given enough protection from their midfield. In other words, to pin the club’s failings this season on Wojciech Szczesny would be supremely unfair.

There may have been a few shots that he should have saved this season, but I’m not sure he’s actually lost the club any games. On the other hand, he’s certainly managed to keep the Gunners in games that they probably should have lost.

Still, it would be difficult to turn one’s nose up at a move for Iker Casillas. He was regarded by most as the world’s best goalie a season or two ago. His stock may have plummeted in recent months (whilst Manuel Neuer’s has risen), but he’s still a quality option who would certainly have a lot to offer this Arsenal side.

If he’s available at the right price, he’d be an excellent addition to Arsene Wenger’s squad. Let’s just hope that he doesn’t squeeze Wojciech out.
