Manchester United have spent so long chasing Bayern Munich’s Toni Kroos, that this latest change in direction may come as something as a surprise for fans. According to Sport Witness, who reference a rumour in Spanish source ‘Fichajes’, The Red Devils are on the hunt to sign another young German midfielder, Mario Gotze.
That’s right, the same Gotze who only just moved to the Allianz Arena last summer. Since moving from Borussia Dortmund, he’s been a resounding success. He’s made 39 appearances for Bayern and has found the back of the net 13 times. That’s an excellent return for a young midfielder.
The source claims that Manchester United are willing to pay 40m euros (£33m) to get a hold of Mario Gotze. That’s 3m euros more than Bayern Munich spent on him last summer. Whether that’s enough of a profit to convince Bayern to sell is anybody’s guess.
Given Gotze’s important role in Pep Guardiola’s squad, this looks like a particularly unlikely deal. We do know, however, that Manchester United have a heap of cash to spend this summer and may well be in a position to convince the Germans to sell. If The Red Devils show some ambition in the transfer market and are willing to break their transfer record they may just be able to close this impossible deal.
The thought of Mario Gotze slotting in alongside Juan Mata is an exciting one. The little Spanish talent hasn’t had a chance to fully strut his stuff this season, but you get the feeling that playing alongside a bright young spark like Gotze could breathe fresh life into his performances.
United’s struggles this season call for some serious action. They need to take charge in the transfer market. Signing a player like Mario Gotze (or even Toni Kroos) just won’t be enough. If the club manages to bring in two-or-three world-class signings, however, they may just be able to turn things around.
