Can Arsenal convince Bayern Munich to sell their leading man?

|

Munich's Mandzukic celebrates a goal during their German Bundesliga match against Stuttgart in MunichThere’s little doubt that Arsenal will be on the hunt for a striker this season. It’s the one area of their squad where they’ve been notably short of options this season. Imagine what they could have achieved if they had a couple of world class options in this department?

As a result, The Gunners have been picking up a number of links to some of Europe’s best strikers. Chief among them is Bayern Munich’s Mario Mandzukic, whose reputation continues to grow.

Unfortunately for Arsenal, his current club just aren’t willing to let him go. Check out these quotes from Bayern Munich’s sporting director Matthias Sammer:

“Nobody even has to bother making an approach for Mandzukic. He is incredibly important to Bayern. I always affectionately say that he plays like an animal.

It is simply amazing how much work he does for the team and how much running he does during a game. They always try to provoke him because he really hurts his opponents with his work-rate.” (Source: The Metro)

That seems pretty clear cut, doesn’t it? Still, it’ll be interesting to see how Bayern Munich deal with the summer arrival of Robert Lewandowski, who like Mandzukic, is regarded as one of world football’s best. Will there really be space in the team for the both of them?

I can’t help but wonder if Mario Mandzukic is a little worried about his current position. Either way, should he get shut out, we could find that Bayern Munich are a bit more open to selling the Croatian forward during next year’s January transfer window.

I’m not sure that Mario Mandzukic is a million miles away from Arsenal’s single current option, Olivier Giroud. Both are hard-working forwards, who use their height and physicality well and take up great positions in and around the penalty area.

The main difference, I suppose, is that Mario Mandzukic is better at what he does than Olivier Giroud. In particular, he’s a better finisher. In two seasons at the Allianz Arena he has scored 46 goals in 83 games. No wonder he’s so highly regarded.

I just hope that Arsene Wenger is able to get Matthias Sammer and co. to change their tone.

What’s you take? Is Mario Mandzukic the perfect option for The Gunners?
