Should Manchester United swoop in for this Celtic star?

Fraser ForsterIt can’t be a fun time to be a Manchester United fan at the moment. The disappointments are coming thick and fast and David Moyes seems to be incapable of steadying the ship. This is particularly difficult to deal with given the club’s pedigree and the level of expectation that every fan has.

Whilst the new Manchester United boss has failed to inspire his troops, he has had better luck in the transfer market. Since joining Manchester United he’s brought in two big money midfielders, Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini and has also chased players like Cesc Fabregas and Toni Kroos.

The man is ambitious, I’ll give him that. Indeed, I’d wager that Manchester United fans can’t wait until the summer transfer window to see what happens next. It’s not like actual football is providing much solace at the moment.

This brings me to [football] direct‘s claim that Manchester United are in the market to sign Celtic’s highly rated stopper, Fraser Forster. ‘What’s that?’, I hear you cry, ‘don’t Manchester United already have a good keeper?’

Well yes, but as the source notes, David De Gea has been attracting attention from Real Madrid and may well fancy a move back to his own country. The Spaniard has come on leaps and bounds this season and is probably good enough to replace Iker Casillas.

But if he does move on, he’d leave the Red Devils in a real fix. Signing somebody like Fraser Forster would become a necessity.

Forster has spent four years in the Scottish Premier League, winning plaudits for his stand-out performances. But I’m sure he’d jump at an opportunity to sign for a team in the Barclays Premier League. This would provide him with better exposure and a better chance of breaking into the England international first team.

Of course, Celtic won’t let him go without a fight. David Moyes will have to use some financial muscle to make a deal happen. He’s moved in for player’s with big reputations and big prices before and I’m sure he won’t be scared off by Celtic.

Whether or not David De Gea moves on, bringing somebody like Forster into the team is a smart move. He’s got a proven track record and will keep De Gea on his toes. He’s exactly the kind of player that Moyes should be chasing.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United be shopping around for a new goalkeeper?
