Jackson MartinezEarlier in the season Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers spoke of his desire to drive Liverpool into a top four finish and to then deliver some ‘next level’ signings in the transfer market. He said:

“I took over the team in eighth and that’s what we have been building towards over the last 18 months. If we can get into the elite competition, it attracts a different type of player as well. I think it’s very important and hopefully it will be this year.” (Source: The Mirror)

Having just beaten Manchester United in the Premier League, Liverpool’s top four finish is more or less nailed on. Indeed, there’s even talk of The Reds making a late charge for the title.

Either way, Brendan Rodgers is in a good position to deliver those aforementioned ‘next level’ signings. It’s a good time to be a Liverpool fan, isn’t it?

The Mirror recently ran an article that suggested The Reds are ‘interested’ in FC Porto’s superstar striker, Jackson Martinez. Unfortunately, they also note that he has a ‘£30-35m’ price-tag. It’ll be interesting to see if Liverpool can really compete for these kinds of players.

One thing’s for sure: The Reds are a club who may be able to attract these kind of players once more. With Rodgers in charge, they’re heading in a very exciting direction and with Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge providing firepower, they’re likely to arrive at their destination fairly quickly.

Liverpool fans may well question if they really need another world-class striker, given their current options. But it’s worth remembering: having multiple options in every area of the pitch and sparking competition rarely hurts a side. Sure, footballers will get surly from time to time, but these kinds of circumstances tend to bring the best out of everyone.

Besides, it looks like Martinez is the real deal. In 78 appearances for FC Porto, he has found the back of the net 54 times. That’s an absolutely staggering return. What’s more, he holds the ball up well, works hard, tracks back and contributes in other areas of the pitch.

It’s easy to see why his price-tag has grown and grown. He’s about as ‘next level’ as a signing can get and I’d love to see Rodgers make a concerted effort to go after him in the summer.

What’s your take? Is Jackson Martinez the right man for the job at Liverpool?

Would rather went for young thiago motta from real madrid if we could get him for around 15’million. Its goin to be hard to get some who wants to play second fiddle till our two world class stikers. Im just going to enjoy the rest of the season with players we have now, who have been an absolute pleasure to watch this year. Considering all the injurys we’ve had this year our sqaud have pulled together as group and done us all proud along with bredan rodgers. Keep it up lads every liverpool supporter around the world, have smiles on their faces from ear to ear thats how proud we are of the whole team and manager this season. Ynwa

Maybe worth 8- 12 mil, not proven in EPL only in an inferior league plus not as good as Sturridge so as usual highly inflated by the europeans trying to make large out of average.

As usual you are found wanting in the reliable source area of good reporting.
