Manchester United ‘close’ to signing long-term target: time to celebrate?

Ezequiel GarayTuesday night’s Manchester derby was yet another reminder of how far off the pace Manchester United now are.

David Moyes has been given every chance to succeed at Old Trafford. The Manchester United top brass have been extremely patient and understanding. They’ve swept the bad results under the carpet and they’ve been willing to back him financially in the transfer market.

What’s more, the ex-Everton man hasn’t been shy of spending the club’s money. He spent big on Marouane Fellaini last summer before spending £37m on Juan Mata last January. He also signed off Wayne Rooney’s £300k-a-week contract.

Unfortunately, his free-spending has yet to translate into good performances on the pitch. Under Sir Alex Ferguson Manchester United were able to take on all comers and beat anybody on their day. Nowadays they look capable of losing to just about anybody.

When a team as strong as Manchester City show up at Old Trafford, it almost strikes you as a forgone conclusion. I can only hope that drastic action is taken in the summer transfer market, regardless of whether David Moyes is still in charge.

The Mirror recently published an article suggesting that The Red Devils are now close to wrapping up a deal for long-term transfer target, Ezequiel Garay.

The Argentine centre-back currently has a £17m release clause written into his Benfica contract. It’s believed that Manchester United are looking for a discount on this price, but may well be willing to splash out regardless.

With Nemanja Vidic heading to Old Trafford’s exit door and Rio Ferdinand likely to follow, United need to be looking at their defensive options. Garay is a player who has been on the club’s ‘watchlist’ for quite some time, so the entire set-up will know exactly what he’s capable of.

He’s got experience at the top level, he’s got pace, he’s got drive and he’s physically tough. I can’t help but feel that he’s the perfect replacement for Manchester United’s out-going defenders.

So now that The Mirror are claiming that a deal is ‘close’, I guess it’s time to start celebrating?

What’s your take? Is Ezequiel Garay a good choice for Manchester United? Should Moyes bring in somebody else as well?
