Xherdan ShaqiriLiverpool may have looked like a complete attacking unit this season, blowing away teams like Arsenal and Manchester United, but I’m not sure the balance is quite right just yet.

Most of The Reds creativity seems to come down the middle from players like Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson. Unfortunately, Liverpool haven’t got the same threat level down the flanks. Whilst Raheem Sterling has developed very nicely this season, Brendan Rodgers simply doesn’t have enough viable options in this area of the pitch.

With Champions League football on the horizon this looks like an issue that The Reds will need to address in the summer transfer window. It’s up to Brendan Rodgers to flesh out the squad and help the team to complete on multiple fronts next season.

This brings me to The Mirror‘s recent article suggesting that Liverpool are in the chase for Bayern Munich’s Xherdan Shaqiri. The Swiss winger is something of a bit part player at the Allianz Arena, having played just 62 games in two seasons, many of which were as a substitute.

As it happens, his brother Erdin (who seems particularly clued up) has spoken about Xherdan’s future:

“Xherdan is 22. At this age, he needs to be playing regularly, which is not currently the case. We are waiting now until summer. Then, when clubs make approaches such as Liverpool, Manchester United, Inter Milan and other top clubs, we can listen to their offers. That said, Bayern still remains our first point of contact before we talk to other clubs.”

It’s exciting to see Liverpool’s name get mentioned first on that shortlist. It suggests that Liverpool are well placed to get their man in the summer transfer window.

Despite his limited game time this season, he’s managed to find the back of the net seven times. He’s got electric pace, quick feet, great technique and a direct attacking nature. I think he could end up being the player Brendan Rodgers thought he was getting when he loaned Victor Moses from Chelsea.

The Mirror suggest that he has a £20m price-tag, which is a lot of money. But if the Reds are prepared to splash the cash, they could end up with a genuinely world-class player on their books.

What’s your take? Is Xherdan Shaqiri the right choice for Liverpool?
