Is this the ideal £8m solution for Manchester United?

Santiago AriasAt the moment, the futures of Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Rafael and Patrice Evra remain uncertain. Manchester United face the very real possibility of losing an entire back four during the summer transfer window. Whatever way you cut it, that’s bad news. It would be tough for any club to adapt to losing one or two players, but losing three or four could well cement United’s position as a mid-club side.

That’s a provocative statement, isn’t it?

I think we can all agree that if Manchester United are to improve next season, David Moyes will have to put his money where his mouth is. If they’re to challenge for the Premier League title once more, they’ll need to make some very smart decisions in the transfer market indeed. Moyes will certainly need to take a long hard look at his defense and try and figure out a solution to his oncoming defensive exodus.

According to The Mirror, David Moyes is keen on Everton right-back Seamus Coleman (of course he is, the man isn’t shy of plundering is old club, is he?). The Irish ace has come on leaps and bounds this season, establishing himself as one of the best full-backs in the Premier League. He’d fit in nicely at Old Trafford.

Unfortunately, Everton have shown no interest in letting one of their best players go. Having persuaded Jose Mourinho to sell Juan Mata, I’m not sure that David Moyes and co. will have the energy to tackle Roberto Martinez.

Fortunately, The Mirror has also lined up an alternative. They claim that PSV defender Santiago Arias could be part of Manchester United’s £200m overhaul this summer.

‘Who?’, you ask. The 22-year-old has picked up 3 caps for Colombia and has started making waves since moving to PSV last summer. He’s better known for his attacking endeavours, as he’s so comfortable on the ball, isn’t afraid to take people on and can fire in a neat cross. Luckily, he’s no slouch in the defensive department either.

He’s got an £8m price-tag, which isn’t outside of Manchester United’s financial reach. That would make him significantly cheaper and more obtainable that Seamus Coleman. If Manchester United were to move in for the Colombian this summer, I certainly wouldn’t be disappointed.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United be in the market for Santiago Arias, or continue to chase Seamus Coleman?
