Can Manchester United pull off this audacious swap deal?

Radamel Falcao MonacoRobin Van Persie surprised everyone after Manchester United’s 2-0 defeat at Olympiakos, by calling out his team-mates. Here’s what he said, just in case you forgot:

“Our fellow players are sometimes occupying the spaces I want to play in. And when I see that it makes it difficult for me to come to those spaces as well. That forces me to adjust my runs, based on the position of my fellow players. Unfortunately, they’re often playing in my zones. I think that’s a shame.”

ESPN claim that RVP later apologised to his team-mates (or his fellows players, as he weirdly describes them), but his comments are still shocking. To chide his team-mates and his boss’s tactics is a big step. This suggests to me that the Dutchman has developed an ‘I’m bigger than the club’ mind-set.

There have also been rumours linking Robin with a move away from Old Trafford in the summer. Whether these are true or not, the constant rumblings of discontent that his camp keep emitting just aren’t helping Manchester United’s cause. It’s got to the stage where I wouldn’t be that sad to see him leave the club. That’s a shame given the role he played last year.

This brings me to an interesting story courtesy of [football] direct. They suggest that Monaco would be willing to entertain a swap deal between their superstar Colombian striker, Ramadel Falcao and Robin Van Persie. Sounds good, right? Unfortunately, the source also notes that United would have to throw in a significant cash sum to make this deal happen.

That makes sense. Falcao is 3 years younger than RVP (28 v 31) and has an even better goal scoring record. Whilst at Porto he scored 72 goals in 87 games. At Atletico Madrid he found the back of the net 70 times in 91 games. He’s part way through his first season with Monaco and has already scored 11 goals in 19 games. The man is an unstoppable force in front of goal.

I’d love to see him get a chance in the Premier League. If Robin Van Persie were to go in the other direction, then I wouldn’t be too disappointed. Trading a man who has been making waves for all the wrong reasons this season for a player who’s widely considered to be one of the most feared strikers in world football, would be a significant step up.

What’s your take? Can Manchester United really pull off this audacious swap deal?
