Xherdan ShaqiriWhilst at FC Basel between 2009-2012, Xherdan Shaqiri earned a reputation for being one of the most exciting young wingers in world football. During his three seasons with the Swiss side, he made 130 appearances, scoring 23 goals.

He’s since spent two years at Bayern Munich, making just 62 appearances, many of which were as a substitute. The Bundesliga champions have one of the most competitive midfields in the European football and it can often be difficult for youngsters like Shaqiri to make the breakthrough they deserve.

Whilst the 22-year-old has hardly been cast asunder, he’s certainly not in Pep Guardiola’s starting XI. Indeed, if he’s after regular first team football, he may have to look for a change of scenery.

As it happens, the player does seem to be weighing up his options. Check out these quotes from the man himself:

“When you hear these names, of course you have to listen to the offer, but there is nothing concrete,’ he said. I cannot say anything to this. I am feeling good in Munich but as a player you have to listen, if one of these top clubs is interested.

I hear the interest from Borussia Moenchengladbach for the first time. You have to ask Gladbach. I cannot say anything. Bundesliga is the best league for me, but I also like the Premier League and Serie A. In Serie A many teams have developed well with nice players.” (Source: The Metro)

He seems to be covering just about every base with those comments. If a Premier League club were to come knocking, I’m sure that Shaqiri would jump at the opportunity. This brings me to The Metro’s claim that Liverpool have their eye on the pacy midfielder and that they may make a move for him in the summer.

The Reds have two world class centre-forwards, but the service into the likes of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge has often times been lacking. If Liverpool can add a little more threat down the wings, they’d be in a very strong position to mount a serious title charge next season.

Xherdan Shaqiri seems to fit the bill perfectly. Better still, he seems to be open to a move. Could this be a match made in heaven?

What’s your take? Would you like to see this Bayern Munich star head to Anfield?
