William CarvalhoHaving already brought in two expensive midfielders, the world is waiting with baited breath to see what David Moyes does next. Neither Marouane Fellaini, nor Juan Mata have had an immediate effect at Old Trafford, but they both have the potential to elevate this club and help them compete for the title next season.

As such, anybody else that’s brought in will have to have a similar level of talent. This brings me to GiveMeSport‘s claim that Manchester United are still trailing Sporting Lisbon’s defensive midfielder, William Carvalho. They even carry quotes from the player himself. Speaking after a game against Braga, Carvalho told the Press:

“It’s nice being praised and to know there are some big clubs interested in me. It could be Manchester United or Real Madrid. It’s just nice to have a great European club after me, but at the moment I’m just totally focused on Sporting and doing my best until the end of the season.”

Unfortunately, the player doesn’t reveal whether there has been genuine contact from either Real Madrid or Manchester United. It could be that this is still all newspaper nonsense, but these stories are becoming all the more plausible by the day.

Who’s to say that David Moyes wont spend big on a defensive midfielder this summer? GiveMeSport also claim that United have scouted Carvalho 13 times already this season. The interest in the player seems fairly genuine.

And why not? They have just spent big on an attacking midfielder (Mata), so signing somebody to provide him with protection is smart. Carvalho is quick across the ground, physically tough and he positions himself well. Despite his age, he’s got a real footballing brain and could well turn into a world-class talent.

Unfortunately, he already comes with a world-class price tag. The 21-year-old has a £37.1m release clause written into his Sporting Lisbon contract. If Manchester United can’t convince Sporting to sell for less, they’ll end up spending as much on him as they did on Juan Mata.

In other words, he’ll have an awful lot to live up to. Still, he’ll know his duties well. If he provides protection in front of the back four, works hard, breaks up play when the opposition has the ball and helps to keep possession when United have it, then he’ll have done a good job.

If he does all of the above well, then he’ll prove worthy of his price-tag. Now we just need to see whether David Moyes is ready and willing to spend that kind of money once again.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United spend big on William Carvalho?
