Paul PogbaWhatever happens this season, it’ll be fascinating to see how Arsene Wenger responds in the transfer market. It’s clear that Arsenal are close to having a squad that’s capable of competing with European football’s very best. All they need is another one or two more world class players and the confidence that it takes to compete at the very top level.

Arsenal’s failings against the big boys this season are rather telling. Big defeats by Manchester City and Liverpool and failure to defeat a weakened Manchester United side showcase Arsenal’s inability to compete with the top teams. The only way to counteract this is to bring in players with the confidence to compete at this level.

If Arsene Wenger does bring anybody in this summer (which I think he must), I hope he only looks at ready-made, world-class talent. This brings me to GiveMeSport‘s claim that Arsenal are in the market for ex-Manchester United star, current Juventus ace, Paul Pogba.

It’s only natural I suppose. Paul Pogba is one of the best young French footballers in the game and Wenger has a penchant for talented players from that region of the world.

Still,  in days of yore, Arsenal would have been priced out of any potential battle for Pogba. The youngster has been building quite a reputation for himself over in Serie A and his price-tag has skyrocketed over the course of the last season.

And yet, GiveMeSport suggest that Arsenal could have the financial firepower to make a 50m euro (£40m) deal happen. That’s a staggeringly huge amount of cash and would represent a massive signal of intent on the part of Arsene Wenger and the rest of the Arsenal top brass.

It could also be treated as ‘getting one over’ on Manchester United, who let the player go before giving him a real chance to prove himself.

Of course, with Pogba’s temperament (he was hardly easy to manage at Old Trafford), this is a risky one. But it’s worth remembering that Pogba has settled in well at Juventus and that Wenger has helped to nurture even some of the most tenacious young footballers into maturity.

Could Arsene Wenger have yet another opportunity to mould the next big French superstar? I certainly hope so.

What’s your take? Can Arsenal really afford to compete for this gifted Juventus youngster?

I thought you had to get a season or two in and not just a game or two at a Club to be classified as a star. Ex-manchester United star? I don’t think so.
