Ashley ColeWith Liverpool still basking in the glow of a startling 5-1 victory over title-contenders Arsenal, it’s a little difficult to start thinking ahead to the summer. But when a transfer story like this one pops up, it’s always worth a look.

This season holds plenty of promise for the Reds, but I don’t think they’re in with a shot of winning the big prize. Chelsea and Manchester City look like tough nuts to crack and Arsenal have developed the consistency that is so often the hallmark of Champions.

But if Liverpool keep improving and Brendan Rodgers spends a little cash in the summer, they could be in with a real shot next season. Finally, it’s a good time to be a Reds fan once more.

The aforementioned story is brought to us by The Mirror, who claim that Liverpool will make a move for Chelsea defender Ashley Cole, when his current contract comes to an end in the summer.

This move would represent something of a left turn for Brendan Rodgers, who is renowned for targeting younger players in the transfer market. Ashley Cole is now 33-years-old. He’s approaching the autumn of his career and this will likely be the last contract he signs.

But, given that Cole has plenty of pedigree and will be a free agent, it’s easy to see why he’d make an exception in this case.

After years of regular game-time at Stamford Bridge, Ashley Cole has finally had his position as first-choice left back usurped. He’s no longer top dog and may well be willing to move to a club that would give him pride of position once more.

He’s certainly still a good player and one of the best left-backs in the Premier League on his day. Liverpool have some good options in this department, but I think it’s fair to say that Ashley Cole would represent a step up.

Even as his age starts to slow him down, he’s still going to keep his defensive nous and his crossing ability. I’d say that he has another two-or-three good years left in him.

Besides, given his freebie status, it’s not much of a gamble to take, is it?

What’s your take? Should the Reds snap up this Chelsea defender?

Definitely. Rodgers brought in Toure last summer, so its not that far a shout. His insane wages won’t be FSG’s cup of tea though unfortunately.
