Brendan Rodgers has proven to be an astute force in the transfer market since arriving at Liverpool, but he doesn’t exactly have a 100% record. Whilst the likes of Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho have settled in nicely, others like Kolo Toure has struggled to make the grade.
Then there’s Joe Allen, who followed Brendan Rodgers to Anfield from Swansea City 18 months ago. Whilst with the Swans, the young Welshman had earned a reputation for being one of the best passers in the Premier League.
It was also clear that he had a genuine football brain, was capable of reading the game, finding gaps in between players and delivering a killer ball. But ever since his £15m move to Liverpool, these powers seem to have deserted him.
A long-term injury and a lack of regular game time hasn’t helped, but the fact that he’s shown so little promise over a period of a year and a half is disappointing. He could have been a long-term replacement for Steven Gerrard, but now he’s beginning to look like dead-weight.
Jordan Henderson has skipped ahead of him in the pecking order, so if he wants regular game time, he may well have to switch clubs. That brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that Liverpool ‘may be willing to sell Allen this summer’ and that Everton would be at the head of the queue if he were sent packing.
The source also slaps a £10m price-tag on the Welshman, which accounts for both his depreciation in value and the three years that remain on his Liverpool contract. Whether Rodgers will be willing to admit defeat when it comes to Joe Allen, remains to be seen.
Everton don’t make a habit of signing players from Liverpool, so if Martinez is genuinely interested, he must believe that Allen is the real deal.
This strikes me as a win-win for all the parties involved. Liverpool will get partially re-reimbursed for a player they don’t use much any more. (only 7 League starts this season!), Everton will get a player with some potential and Allen will get a chance to kick-start his career.
I don’t believe that the Welshman became a bad player over night. He deserves another shot. Let’s hope that Everton are willing to give him it.
What’s your take? Is it time for Liverpool to wave goodbye to Joe Allen? Should Everton be interested?
